Ethnic expedition to the Matsés tribe - “Jaguar people” of the Peruvian Amazon

Day 1 - Mon 2 May 2022 : Arrival in Lima, Peru

 

Arrival in Lima, the capital city of Peru. 

 

Don't miss the famous local delicacy - Cuy (Guinea Pig). We recommend PANCHITA, a delicious traditional restaurant where you can try out Peruvian street foods such as picarones (Peruvian sweet potato doughnuts) / anticuchos (grilled cow hearts) in a contemporary style.

Day 2 - Tues 3 May 2022 : Lima city tour

 

• Plaza Mayor de Lima, a square in the centre of Lima. Nearby are shops, restaurants, landmarks such as the Palacio presidential and the Peruvian Independence Site.

 

• St. Francis Monastery, the church and convent were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. 

 

• Visit Huaca pucllana, an ancient pyramid-shaped site, a former place of worship in the pre-Inca empire.

 

• If anyone is interested in the museum, we may choose to visit the National Museum of the to learn about the history of the country

Day 3 - Wed 4  May 2022 : Lima - Iquitos

 

After breakfast, depart for Lima Airport on our way to the capital of Peruvian Amazonia - Iquitos. Meet a local guide who will lead us to the Matses. Walk around Plaza de Armas and explore the lifestyle of the people.

Day 4 - Thurs 5 May 2022 : Iquitos

 

Visit the Ethnological Museum to understand the way of life of indigenous peoples. Walk to the populous Belem market where you can find anything from fresh fish to raccoons, cigars and many exotic drinks.

 

Afternoon, we will visit the flooded area of Belen where you can appreciate the floating houses and see daily life.

Day 5 - Fri 6 May 2022 : Iquitos - Angamos (chartered Flight)

 

Travel from Iquitos to Angamos by Charter plane. Angamos is the Jaravi waterfront village where we meet the Matses, or mixed race people known as the Mestizos.

Day 6 - Sat 7 May 2022 : Angamos - Buen Peru 

 

Navigate across Galvez and Loboyaccu rivers until we reach Buen Peru village. The journey will take approximately 8 hours to arrive.

Day 7 - Sun 8 May 2022 : Buen Peru - Matses tribe 

 

After breakfast, we will learn how the locals extract venom from the Sapo frog. Sapo is a healing ritual used in South America. After that we travel to Matses through the tributaries of Galves and the Loboyaku rivers. The journey takes approximately 3-4 hours (depending on the water level).

Day 8-10 - Mon-Wed 9-11 May 2022 : Matses tribe

 

We will spend the next two days sleeping in the Maloca (traditional house) with The Matses to learn about their culture as well as participate in their daily customs. The list of activities include but are not limited to:

 

- Tobacco sniffing ceremony

- Sapo ceremony

- Jungle exploration hikes

- Piranha finishing

- Night canoe excursions in search of caimans

Day 11 - Thurs 12 May 2022 :  Matses - Angamos 

 

We will spend the whole day traveling downstream through Galves and Loboyaccu river until we reach Angamos

Day 12 - Fri 13 May 2022 :  Angamos - Iquitos (chartered Flight)

 

Return to Iquitos by charter flight and check in at the hotel

Day 13- Sat 14 May 2022 : Iquitos - Lima

 

Depart from Iquitos and return to Lima where we will spend a night in Miraflores district.

Day 14 - Sun 15 May 2022 : Lima - Departure

 

Transfer to Lima airport for your flight back home. For travelers who choose our extended trip to Machu Picchu, we will take a flight to Cusco from here.

Saga club discount: You are automatically offered our club membership after your first expedition. The following discount applies: 3% on 2nd trip, 5% on 3rd trip, 7% on 4th trip or 10% all after. This cannot be combined with the early bird discount. 

 

Payment & Deposit:

• 35% deposit payment is required for reserving your spots

• Balance payment is due 60 days before the departure date. Failure to do so will result in cancellation of booking.

• If the booking is made within 60 days of departure date, full payment is required. 

 

Cancellation policy:

​

• In any case of cancellation, 20% of deposit payment is refundable or the whole amount can be kept as credits for any other Saga expeditions within 2 years of cancellation date. 

• In any case of cancellation, if full payment is made, a full refund will be issued minus 10% cancellation fee and any cost to the third parties.

• If the cancellation is due to COVID19, a full refund will be issued minus any cost incurred. We always attempt to maximize the refund for our client’s benefit! 

• In the event of premature departure during the expedition for any reasons, no refund will be issued.

All of our expeditions take you through one of the most challenging roads in the world. While the Saga team endeavors to make the itinerary as accurate as possible, it should be considered as an approximate agenda of activities rather than a rigid schedule. Trip itineraries are subject to last-minute, and on-the-ground revision due to weather, road conditions, government and local restrictions, and other reasons beyond our control. Note that the order of visits and excursions can be modified according to local conditions (i.e. state of roads, market days, etc.). If some visits and/or tours could not be done due to external conditions, they will be replaced when possible. Your safety is always our first priority!
